Austria Christmas

Christmas at home just is special. The whole family together, catching up, relaxing, having fun.

This year was wonderful, I loved being at home and really loved seeing my family. Unfortunately 3/4 of us became ill over Christmas, one of those horrible illnesses that drag on, mine lasted for most of my stay. But you realise quickly that none of it really matters that much as long as you are together.

I can honestly say that despite the coughing and sniffling I absolutely loved my Christmas. I miss my family already. Roll on Easter!

Calton Hill and this wonderful city

My mum has been here these past few weeks, which has been lovely lovely lovely. Made all the lovelier by the fact that Edinburgh did a good job of really behaving itself for most of the two weeks and giving us some stunning weather, really making the city shine.

SAM_1601 SAM_1604

So on one of my mum’s first days here we went up Calton Hill. You get the best views of the city from there.

On the way up we could see the Newtown buildings and beyond, as well as some lovely autumn colours on the tree tops.

On of the things that really interest me about this time of year is the long shadows casting such interesting patterns across the ground.

Calton Hill has some lovely monuments and sites that add to the peaceful atmosphere.

SAM_1639 SAM_1640 SAM_1648 SAM_1685

And you can look down and see every angle of the city, including the narrow buildings along the Royal Mile and elsewhere in Old Town.

SAM_1661 SAM_1667 SAM_1673

You also get a lovely view of Princes Street.

Calton  Hill is popular but never really packed. People just stand and marvel at the views.

Family – the most important thing

This is the last of my posts about our wonderful holiday in Austria, and it is dedicated to a few photographs of us hanging out as a family. Family really is the most important thing, and I miss them all terribly. I wish I could see them more, but I am glad that we all get on so well and that we had this amazing time together. I can’t wait to see them again soon.

I love you all ❤

Visiting Oma in Birkfeld

SAM_1147 SAM_1102

On one of the days while Fraser and I were in Austria we went to visit my Oma (grandmother), in Birkfeld where she has lived her whole life. It was really important to me that she and Fraser met, even if they could barely communicate with each other, because she means a great deal to me, and she was very excited to meet him.

SAM_1093 SAM_1094

It was yet another beautiful day, perfect weather to spend some time sitting outside, catching up as a family.

SAM_1095 SAM_1097 SAM_1117 SAM_1135

We decided to go for a walk around Birkfeld, which is a pretty little place that Dieter and I used to visit a lot as children.

SAM_1144 SAM_1208 SAM_1216

First we refuelled with some coffee (or ice coffee).

SAM_1161 SAM_1175

Then we had a little look around the place as it was so wonderfully sunny.

SAM_1148 SAM_1195 SAM_1198 SAM_1199 SAM_1214 SAM_1219 SAM_1224 SAM_1225

There was hardly anyone around, it was peaceful and pretty.

SAM_1228 SAM_1238 SAM_1249 SAM_1250 SAM_1252

The whole day was really lovely, I am happy that Fraser and Oma met and that I got to spend some time with her.

Food at Home

One of the best things about being back home in Austria is the food, the glorious, glorious food! Honestly we spent so much time eating in the few weeks we were in Austria, but then, if you can’t eat a ridiculous amount when you’re on holiday when can you?

So here is a little tribute to these culinary delights:

The regular barbecues we enjoyed in the garden as a family….

SAM_0258 SAM_0934 SAM_0975 SAM_0982

Fraser, here eagerly awaiting his plate of grilled food.

SAM_0989 SAM_0993 SAM_0995

Sausages, vegetables, chicken… we felt as if we could have had this for every meal.

SAM_0266 SAM_0959 SAM_0980 SAM_1006

The delicious (and in the heat much needed) ice creams.

SAM_0368 SAM_0370 SAM_0371 SAM_1009

And ice coffees, eagerly scoffed down by my brother Dieter.

Of course the other lovely drinks we enjoyed too, such as post-dinner chinese plum wine, and refreshing beverages.

SAM_0461 SAM_1002

Great restaurant food.

SAM_1269 SAM_1286 SAM_1290

And last, but certainly not least, 60th birthday ice cream cake.

So back in Edinburgh now it is definitely back to exercising and eating more healthily, but, my God, was it good while it lasted!

Grünersee 2

Some more pictures from our wonderful day at Grünersee. (You can find part 1 here.)

As we felt we hadn’t yet had enough of the beautiful surroundings at the lake, we decided to go down to the lakeside and walk around closer to the water’s edge.

SAM_0626 SAM_0717

The sun came out, really highlighting the gorgeous turquoise water.

SAM_0724 SAM_0653 SAM_0651

We wandered around, admiring the different colours in the surroundings, it was all so peaceful.

SAM_0714 SAM_0751

Fraser took to skimming stones across the water, and we managed to clamber on to a rock to get a closer look at the water and touch it (it was very very cold!)

We decided to head back up the path that leads to the lake and investigate another smaller lake nearby. It is less well known but just as beautiful.

SAM_0817SAM_0584 SAM_0839 SAM_0844 SAM_0856 SAM_0847

A lovely spot to spend some time together as a family.

SAM_0842 SAM_0889 SAM_0882 SAM_0911 image (4)

We even found some interesting insects to photograph.

SAM_0917 SAM_0928

Before long it was time to turn back, but we all feel that this was one of the most memorable days of the holiday. If you are ever in the area, make sure to visit the lovely Grünersee, its beauty really stays with you.

SAM_0932 SAM_0913 SAM_0672

Grünersee 1

We have been enjoying our wonderful holiday in Austria, hence my inactivity here. But we have been doing so many wonderful things.

Last week we went to Grünersee, and it was stunning! It’s a beautiful, picturesque lake in a quiet, calm spot.

We drove up and had lunch before walking around the lake.

Afterwards we began the walk on the upper circle around the lake, we got our first glimpses of it through the trees.

SAM_0495 SAM_0520SAM_0506

The scenery around it is wonderful too.

As we came round the trees the lake revealed itself in all its turquoise glory.

SAM_0539 SAM_0548 SAM_0608 SAM_0554 SAM_0609

It was great to investigate the lake together as a family.

SAM_0570 image (1) image (2)

We decided to go down to the lakeside to see more, we weren’t ready to leave the lake just yet.

SAM_0611 SAM_0623 SAM_0615

More to come soon, in part 2….

By the Lake

This is where Fraser and I have been spending our days.

SAM_0406 SAM_0382

We are staying with my parents back home in Austria. The weather has been beautiful and last Thursday we went to a wonderful lake to swim and relax.

It is nice to just stop and gaze at the sky, not having to do anything.

The lake was great and there weren’t even a lot of people there.

Long, hot summer days are what I remember from my childhood, and it’s been wonderful to drink up the sun.

We are really having a fantastic holiday!

To Austria

My long absence is explained by being insanely busy before I left for my holiday back home, and having been busy with family and friends since I got here.

But one of the best parts about being home is always how relaxing it is. The weather has been hot hot hot, so we have been relaxing accordingly.

It’s been lovely to spend time with family and we even had a wedding in the family. Surprisingly, I caught the bouquet.

SAM_0249 SAM_0253

Another highlight so far has been the barbecuing. SO MUCH GOOD FOOD!!

SAM_0266 SAM_0270

Apart from the sunshine, great food, and wonderful company, I have even been treated to an epic thunderstorm. Darkening skies, thunder and lightning, torrential rain.

SAM_0279 SAM_0280 SAM_0291 SAM_0293

It’s safe to say so far this holiday is going wonderfully well! I look forward to the next two weeks here.
