Visit to the Christmas Market

Well it’s that wonderful time of year again and last Monday Fraser and I made our way down to the Christmas Market on Princes Street. It is bigger and better than ever this year. It is not quite as cold as it has been in previous years so it was quite pleasant wandering around all the colourful little stalls.

There was a beautiful carousel in the centre and so much to see.

The main event for us is getting food there every year, we got some delicious sausages, Fraser got an Austrian one and I (sacrilege!) got a German one. They were yummy.

Then we walked around and looked at all the Christmassy stuff.

The ferris wheel really provides a lovely backdrop to the Christmas Market.

The market did its job and put me in a sufficiently Christmassy mood.

Because this city is so damn beautiful in autumn

I know I gush about how lovely Edinburgh is in autumn (well, in all seasons really). But since we spent so much time outdoors this autumn it really struck me when I was going through my photos that there are so many great shots to be captured. One evening in particular, we were walking home across the Meadows and the light was just so perfect and autumnal. Here are just a few pictures to give a sense of the kind of sights you see wandering around Edinburgh at this time of year.

Breath taking, I am almost ready for winter, the change of seasons and the new images as I walk around this lovely city.

Calton Hill and this wonderful city

My mum has been here these past few weeks, which has been lovely lovely lovely. Made all the lovelier by the fact that Edinburgh did a good job of really behaving itself for most of the two weeks and giving us some stunning weather, really making the city shine.

SAM_1601 SAM_1604

So on one of my mum’s first days here we went up Calton Hill. You get the best views of the city from there.

On the way up we could see the Newtown buildings and beyond, as well as some lovely autumn colours on the tree tops.

On of the things that really interest me about this time of year is the long shadows casting such interesting patterns across the ground.

Calton Hill has some lovely monuments and sites that add to the peaceful atmosphere.

And you can look down and see every angle of the city, including the narrow buildings along the Royal Mile and elsewhere in Old Town.

SAM_1661 SAM_1667 SAM_1673

You also get a lovely view of Princes Street.

Calton  Hill is popular but never really packed. People just stand and marvel at the views.

Hello, Bruntsfield!

Seeing as I will be starting my MA soon (that sounds scary, it’s very soon!), I felt I should have a look at the area in which I am going to be spending a fair amount of time.

I do know Bruntsfield reasonably well, it’s not far from where we live now, but I just felt like going to have a look at the Screen Academy itself and its surrounding areas. So we decided to get the bus out to Bruntsfield one morning, looking at all the lovely (and expensive!) houses along the way.

SAM_1350 SAM_1352 SAM_1354 SAM_1362

It was a bit grey and rainy at first but the day soon brightened up and we had a lovely little walk around Bruntsfield.

SAM_1363 SAM_1365

There are lots of nice things to see, and the area around the Screen Academy looks lovely, so I am really looking forward to spending some more time there.

Eventually we got hungry and headed back home for some lunch.

Seeing it made it all seem a lot more real, I am really looking forward to my course starting.

Visiting Oma in Birkfeld

SAM_1147 SAM_1102

On one of the days while Fraser and I were in Austria we went to visit my Oma (grandmother), in Birkfeld where she has lived her whole life. It was really important to me that she and Fraser met, even if they could barely communicate with each other, because she means a great deal to me, and she was very excited to meet him.

SAM_1093 SAM_1094

It was yet another beautiful day, perfect weather to spend some time sitting outside, catching up as a family.

SAM_1095 SAM_1097 SAM_1117 SAM_1135

We decided to go for a walk around Birkfeld, which is a pretty little place that Dieter and I used to visit a lot as children.

SAM_1144 SAM_1208 SAM_1216

First we refuelled with some coffee (or ice coffee).

SAM_1161 SAM_1175

Then we had a little look around the place as it was so wonderfully sunny.

SAM_1148 SAM_1195 SAM_1198 SAM_1199 SAM_1214 SAM_1219 SAM_1224 SAM_1225

There was hardly anyone around, it was peaceful and pretty.

SAM_1228 SAM_1238 SAM_1249 SAM_1250 SAM_1252

The whole day was really lovely, I am happy that Fraser and Oma met and that I got to spend some time with her.

Grünersee 1

We have been enjoying our wonderful holiday in Austria, hence my inactivity here. But we have been doing so many wonderful things.

Last week we went to Grünersee, and it was stunning! It’s a beautiful, picturesque lake in a quiet, calm spot.

We drove up and had lunch before walking around the lake.

Afterwards we began the walk on the upper circle around the lake, we got our first glimpses of it through the trees.

SAM_0495 SAM_0520SAM_0506

The scenery around it is wonderful too.

As we came round the trees the lake revealed itself in all its turquoise glory.

SAM_0539 SAM_0548 SAM_0608 SAM_0554 SAM_0609

It was great to investigate the lake together as a family.

We decided to go down to the lakeside to see more, we weren’t ready to leave the lake just yet.

More to come soon, in part 2….

To Austria

My long absence is explained by being insanely busy before I left for my holiday back home, and having been busy with family and friends since I got here.

But one of the best parts about being home is always how relaxing it is. The weather has been hot hot hot, so we have been relaxing accordingly.

It’s been lovely to spend time with family and we even had a wedding in the family. Surprisingly, I caught the bouquet.

SAM_0249 SAM_0253

Another highlight so far has been the barbecuing. SO MUCH GOOD FOOD!!

SAM_0266 SAM_0270

Apart from the sunshine, great food, and wonderful company, I have even been treated to an epic thunderstorm. Darkening skies, thunder and lightning, torrential rain.

SAM_0279 SAM_0280 SAM_0291 SAM_0293

It’s safe to say so far this holiday is going wonderfully well! I look forward to the next two weeks here.

What’s been happening recently…June

You know what? I’ve decided to embrace the fact that, rather than appearing at the end of each month, this series appears half way through the next month. It just seems that going through and selecting the photos usually takes so long, that more often than not the, ‘What’s been happening recently’ posts, will have to appear a few weeks late.

With that being said, here are some pictures of what’s been happening recently, throughout the month of June:

When the weather is hot…a good idea

Here’s a good idea for when the weather is as blissfully wonderful as it has been for the past week or so. Even though Fraser is working, we have wanted to make the most of the lovely weather, so we have been soaking up the warmth outdoors after he gets back from work. And I can honestly say, cooking dinner, putting it in some tupperware containers and walking over to the park to have dinner in the Meadows is a very good idea!

It was lovely to sit, watching the slowly setting sun, the shadows gradually getting longer, and still feel warm and summery.

We had a very tasty dinner and chatted, a great way to relax after a busy day!

Afterwards we went for a walk around town.

On Friday, knowing that we could have dinner a little later because Fraser didn’t have to work the next day, we also went out when he came home, but this time went for some pre-dinner ice cream.

A very special summer treat, lovely flavours too.

And again, it was still such a warm evening so we slowly wandered around the city until we reached home.

It’s a lovely summer idea, even if you’ve had a busy day, to still get out and enjoy the weather in the evening!
